About me

Hi, my name is Guido Krüger, and I'm the creator and maintainer of gkrueger.com and javabuch.de. I life in Itzehoe, a little town north of Hamburg, in Schleswig-Holstein, North Germany. I'm employed as a software architect at IVI GmbH, a subsidary of the Itzehoer Versicherungen. My spare time is dedicated to photography, writing, my family and many other interesting things.

I've been teaching C and Java in several distance learning projects at FH Flensburg, Germany (in cooperation with Prof. Dr. Michael Kraetzschmar of the Institute For Applied Mathematics), and at the CALCampus Online Learning Center. I've many years of professional experience in computer programming, consulting and project management. The books and articles I wrote are summarized here. Recent photographs I made can be seen in my Photo Gallery. Among my former employers are GBS - Gesellschaft für Büroautomation und Softwareentwicklung, Norderstedt, Krankenhaus Itzehoe, prompt! - Medizinische Informationssysteme GmbH, Hamburg, Talkline GmbH, Elmshorn, Solution42 AG, Quickborn and Portal Software, Inc., Cupertino.

During my studies at Fernuniversität Hagen, I learned most of the basics in computer science and software development. I later moved to the American College of Computer & Information Sciences (at that time called The American Institute For Computer Sciences), where I completed a B.S. in Computer Science. Two years later, in 1996, I finished graduate studies at SUMMIT UNIVERSITY OF LOUSIANA, with a Master of Science in Computer Science. My Thesis was about communications in hospital information systems, and was titled "A structured approach to HL7 application development". It included an HL7 database, a hypertext document and a general JAVA-based application development framework for HL7 communication. Being one of these "80/20" standards (where those 20% of the standard that were left open usually required 80% of the implementation work), at that time, HL7 implementation standardization was a pretty hot topic in hospitals around the world.

For more information on HL7 (Health Level Seven) visit the HL7 Home Site at www.hl7.org. Please understand that I haven't been working with HL7 since finishing my Master's Thesis in 1996. I'm no longer an HL7 specialist anymore. However, if you still want to read my Thesis, an HTML version is provided here.

Note: AICS and Summit University are both correspondance colleges that offer non-traditional degree programs. At the time of studying they were state-approved but not officially accredited, and in many respects, they didn't fulfill regular university standards. However, their self-paced program structure and flexibility helped me to complete a degree while doing professional programming and authoring at the same time.

Furthermore, I've finished the First Certificate in English from the University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate, and I'm a recent graduate of the New York Institute of Photography, the oldest and largest photography school in the US.

Miscellaneous

HTML2RTF

In 1995, during a practical semester at the Hospital of Itzehoe, Robin Gressmann developed a compiler which translates HTML into RTF (Rich Text Format). It accepts HTML-2.0 source (plus a few additions) and generates fully linked RTF files which can be compiled into HLP files using the Windows help compiler. At that time, HTML2RTF was quite popular, and it still has a bunch of downloads every day. However, by today's standards, it's somehow outdated. If you are still interested, visit the HTML2RTF Download Area. For further information, please try to contact Robin via his homepage at www.gressmann.org or send a mail to "robin at gressmann.org".

AppRunner/HotSync

As part of his Master's Thesis, Heiko Hansen did some interesting work based on the US Robotics / 3COM Pilot / Palmpilot Series PDA. In cooperation with prompt! Medizinische Informationssysteme GmbH Heiko developed two facilities called AppRunner and HotSync. AppRunner is a general data browser written in GNU-C which could be used to display any kind of hierarchically structured data on the Pilot and which provides a simple but versatile mechanism to send data back to the server. HotSync is a generic conduit developed in Visual C/C++ which could be configured to connect AppRunner with different kinds of data servers. For example, it has been used successfully to connect the Pilot with a CLIPPER / DBASE database. For further information, see Heiko's Homepage at http://www.mortenhansen.de or send a mail to heiko@mortenhansen.de.
